Here’s three guesses as to why you decided to become an online therapist. Tell me if I’m right…
- Reaching people who otherwise wouldn’t receive treatment.
- Making a living that gives you time and financial freedom by helping people experience mental and relational freedom.
- Giving back to the world because of the powerful impact coaches and counselors have made in your life.
That’s why you set out to be an online therapist, isn’t it?!
But all too often getting your name out there, establishing your presence as a credible practitioner, and building a solid clientele feels like a game of hide and go seek where you’re never found. Am I right?
If so, here’s five questions to ask yourself to make sure you’re doing the right things to be found and get your name out there:
AM I SHOWING UP CLEARLY AND CONSISTENTLY ON SOCIAL MEDIA?
In order to be seen you need to show up where people are looking. Am I right?
With the internet literally at our fingertips individuals are more and more likely to google therapists and connect with them online.
Therefore, it’s imperative that you’re showing up ONLINE so that you can be seen and hired.
Make sure you’re utilizing the best strategies to showing up clearly and consistently on social media HERE!
DO I HAVE A WEBSITE THAT COMMUNICATES MY CREDIBILITY AND PERSONALITY WHILE UNMISTAKABLY INVITING VISITORS TO WORK WITH ME?
Not too long ago I looked for a therapist for myself – that’s right, I practice what I preach. I promptly googled the practice my friend recommended.
When I finally found the website I was disappointed by the vague introduction and long list of credentials that told me little about their ability to crawl into my world and remind me that I was capable of this life thing.
While I was interested in their experience and expertise I wanted to know their credibility in relation to helping me on my life’s journey. Not how far they had come and which school they graduated from.
I wanted to know their process for working with a client, if they prioritized and self-compassionate approach or a solution-driven session, and a little bit of who they were when they weren’t a counselor.
All that to say, make sure your website not only showcases your credibility and expertise, but also your unique approach and personality. At the end of the day a client is hiring a person.
AM I MEETING WITH PRACTITIONERS IN MY AREA ON A MONTHLY BASIS?
Okay, I thought this was kinda a crazy tip for online therapists too the first time I heard it. But Carol O’Saben who said:
“I wish I had started my practice sooner. I’m earning the money I need, doing what I love, and running my own schedule, all because I started my own practice.”
Attributed her networking with local therapists to be key in filling her practice in less than 12 months!
AM I SHOWING UP AND OFFERING VALUE TO OTHER PEOPLE’S AUDIENCES?
You might not have an audience right now. But chances are you know someone who has an audience. And someone in their audience is looking for someone who does what you do.
Seek out interviews on podcasts, in facebook groups, or even via writing a guest blog post where you’re able to share your expertise with someone else’s audience and get in front of new people. You might even want to ask local health and wellness facilities if you can host a workshop for their clients.
DO I HAVE A PROFILE SET UP WITH ONLINE COUNSELOR DATABASE?
We’ve talked a lot about showing up online because that’s where people are looking to find therapists. Take this a step further by showing up on counselor databases where individuals are going to actively connect with a therapist who is right for them!
